Thread milling is a CNC machining process that creates threads by interpolating the cutter’s helical path into a hole or around a shaft. Not like traditional tapping, thread milling uses a rotating cutting tool that spirals into the workpiece to form threads.
Produces cleaner, burr-free threads.
Excellent control over thread depth and pitch.
Especially useful in hard materials or small-diameter blind holes.
Easy to recover if the tool fails (Not like a broken tap stuck in the part).
One tool can machine different thread diameters (same pitch).
Ideal for small batch production or multiple thread sizes.
No need for chip evacuation like traditional taps.
No thread relief required at hole bottom.
Performs well on:
Hardened steels
Titanium
Inconel
Stainless steel
Aluminum and alloys
Type | Use Case |
---|---|
Single-form | High precision, used for tight tolerance threads |
Multi-form | Faster threading, cuts multiple threads per pass |
Solid carbide | High-speed, precision cutting for small holes |
Indexable insert type | Large threads, cost-effective for heavy work |
Metric (M)
UNC / UNF
BSP / NPT
Custom thread profiles
Aerospace parts
Medical devices
Molds and dies
Oil & gas components
Precision mechanical assemblies
Feature | Thread Milling | Tapping |
---|---|---|
Tool breakage risk | Low | High (especially in blind holes) |
Flexibility | High (one tool, many diameters) | Low (one tap per size) |
Surface finish | Excellent | Moderate |
Recoil risk | Low | Medium |
Cost (in volume) | Higher (initial), lower in tooling inventory | Lower per unit, but more fragile |
